Victoria’s architects compete for honours in 2019 Awards
The Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects has today revealed its list of entries in this year’s Victorian Architecture Awards, recognised as the leading program of its kind.
The 248 entries received for this year’s awards almost equal the record set last year and now extend across 14 separate categories, ranging from residential to public and heritage architecture.
Victorian Chapter President Amy Muir said the Institute is absolutely delighted with the breadth of the work submitted this year, which highlights the richness and diversity of Victoria’s architecture.
“This annual celebration provides an unrivalled opportunity not only to showcase excellence but also to communicate the essential value of architects to our communities,” Ms Muir said.
“Our advocacy on critical issues from safety through to sustainability continues to strengthen. We have an enormous amount to contribute to the decisions that will shape the future of this state and the quality of the lived experience in its built environment.”
“The awards are a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the strong working relationships that are established between architect, client, consultants and contractor to deliver quality and robust outcomes for our state.”
“At a time where we are acutely aware of the issues that our industry is facing due to increased procurement and economic pressures, the awards is a time for acknowledging the significant efforts that are collectively made to prioritise quality and longevity over short-term gain. These endeavours ensure that we are supporting building sustainable communities for now and into the future.”
“Architects have an important role to play in developing pragmatic responses to the ever-changing shape of our public realm, creating flexible public buildings to enrich the intersection between people, commerce and our cities and regions.”
“We are seeing innovative approaches to the design of public spaces, with architects demonstrating unique design responses that contribute to our state’s architecture and infrastructure landscape,” says Muir.
The list will now be judged by a panel of leading industry figures in Victorian architecture, ahead of the shortlist announcement in April.
The Australian Institute of Architects awards program offers an opportunity for public and peer recognition of the innovative work of our Victorian architects. The program also provides the Institute with an invaluable mechanism to promote architects and architecture within Victoria, across Australia and internationally.
“The awards program is a celebration of design excellence, which we have in abundance, and creates the perfect forum to discover our buildings and honour the talent we have here in Victoria. I’m looking forward to exploring the entries in more detail at the presentation stage of the program later this month,” Muir adds.
The next stage in the awards process is the Presentation to Juries, which will take place across two days this month and will be held between 41X (Friday 15 March) and the award-winning Learning and Teaching Building at Monash University, Clayton (Saturday 16 March). Last year, the new Monash teaching facility by John Wardle Architects was awarded both National and State Awards for Educational Architecture and Interior Architecture.
As part of the Melbourne Design Week program, the Presentation to Juries is a rare opportunity for the public to hear directly from some of Australia’s most prominent architects about the influences behind Victoria’s most innovative buildings. It is free for the public to attend.
The state winners will be announced on 28 June 2019, and will progress to compete in the National Architecture Awards program.
The full program of presentations is available online here.
