Tall timber building construction to revolutionise construction industry

Sustainability expert, Anissa Farrell from leading architecture firm, Conrad Gargett Riddel Ancher Mortlock Woolley, believes tall timber building construction has the potential to revolutionise the construction industry in Australia.
Anissa will present at the 2014 Green Cities Conference being held in Melbourne this month, on the potential of mass timber construction in shaping the future of the built environment.
Current international case studies have shown Mass Timber Construction rivals traditional construction in cost and efficiency while significantly reducing carbon emissions and preserving non-renewable resources.
‘According to the Green Building Council of Australia, the production of cement is responsible for approximately 90 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with concrete production. Meanwhile steel has one of the highest embodied energy values due to its procurement and production processes. A reduction of these materials in the construction industry would have a significant positive impact on our natural resource depletion and carbon dioxide emissions,’ Ms Farrell said.
‘Australia’s construction industry needs this revolution to remain relevant, adaptable and resilient.’

Green Cities is regarded as Australia’s premier sustainability event which will run from 18-19 March 2014 at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne.
