Garage Sale Trail announced as finalist in the Premier’s Sustainability Awards
Garage Sale Trail has been announced as a finalist in the Community category for this year’s Premier’s Sustainability Awards for their national grass roots waste education program which together with 20 Victorian Councils, including Ararat Rural City Council, Bayside City Council, City of Greater Dandenong, City of Greater Geelong, City of Monash, City of Stonnington, City of Whitehorse, City of Wodonga, City of Yarra, Hobsons Bay City Council, Horsham Rural City Council, Hume City Council, Kingston City Council, Maribyrnong City Council, Moreland City Council, Murrindindi Shire Council, Northern Grampians Shire Council, West Wimmera Shire Council, Wyndham City Council, and Yarriambiack Shire Council, organises communities across the state to hold garage sales on the same day.
Sustainability Victoria CEO Stan Krpan congratulated the Garage Sale Trail team for their creative and influential work towards building a more sustainable environment for all Victorians.
“Delivering these awards each year means we continue to discover the passion and talent Victorians have for protecting their natural environment and thinking creatively about new sustainable practices.
“These awards represent Victoria’s highest recognition for sustainability, and acknowledge leadership, innovation and achievement.
“The more we embed sustainable measures into our day to day lives, the better the outcomes will be, now and into the future,” Mr Krpan said.
Garage Sale Trail is a champion of the REUSE movement and believe that sustainability is best when it’s fun and social.
The council enabled and people powered program organises communities across Victoria to hold garage sales on the same day, to promote reuse, minimise waste to landfill, enable new neighbourly connections and provide a platform for fundraising.
Today, Garage Sale Trail is supported by over 170 councils and seven state government organisations Australia-wide. In 2014 there were 8,242 garage sales registered representing some 2.9-million items listed for reuse at an approximate value of $8.4 million.
Now in their 13th year, the Premier’s Sustainability Awards continue to promote leadership and innovation in sustainability, and encourage a broader adoption of these practices by all Victorians.
In addition to the category awards, the Premier of Victoria, the Hon Daniel Andrews will personally select two winners for the Premier’s Regional Recognition Award and the Premier’s Recognition Award.
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday 29 October at the Plaza Ballroom, Melbourne. Tickets are now available for purchase at www.sustainabilityawards.vic.gov.au until Friday 23 October.
