Gamuda Land Endorsed for 3,000sqm Public Park at Fishermans Bend

Gamuda Land has received council endorsement for its design of a 3,000sqm public park within the Fishermans Bend precinct, which will involve the permanent closure of Johnson Street to create a new urban ecosystem.

Located at the corner of Normanby Road, Johnson Street, and Munro Street, the proposed Johnson Street Park has been designed in consultation with the City of Port Phillip as a priority infrastructure project in the Victorian Government’s Fishermans Bend Framework.

Positioned opposite Gamuda Land’s $200M development, The Canopy, the park will be delivered under a ‘works-in-kind’ agreement and is set for completion in 2026. Once finished, it will feature nature play, picnic areas, BBQ facilities, walking and cycling paths, and open green spaces for the community to enjoy.

The park’s design includes over 6,000 native plants, including 81 native trees, referencing the site’s historical wetland and woodland ecosystems. Partners like Oculus, The Heart Gardening Project, SUGi, and MURRI : YUL have collaborated on the design to ensure it reflects the area’s natural heritage.

Gamuda Land General Manager, Jarrod Tai, welcomed the positive feedback from the community and the City of Port Phillip, saying, “We value the community’s feedback and look forward to handing this park back once complete.”

The park will connect seamlessly with The Canopy’s sustainable mixed-use precinct, which will feature 213 apartments and 14 ground-floor retail tenancies, alongside amenities like a rooftop spa, BBQ, and alfresco dining spaces. Gamuda Land’s focus on greenery aligns with its goal to plant 1 million trees by 2030, with nearly 920,000 already planted.

The park’s proposal will now be included in a planning scheme amendment request to be lodged by the Council for consideration by the Minister for Planning later this year.
