YourMelbourne Kicks off to Find Future City Planners
BMW Group Australia and RMIT University’s School of Economics, Finance and Marketing today announced the launch of the third edition of the 2022 YourMelbourne competition.
The competition is open to all students attending RMIT University and challenges entrants to imagine the future mobility within the city of Melbourne in the year 2030.
Students are encouraged to think of innovative and sustainable ways to manage climate change, a growing population and the need for mobility amid Melbourne’s expanding population and sprawling urban landscape.
To further encourage participation and learning in a post-COVID restrictions environment, numerous in-person workshops will be held this year for students as an opportunity to gain advice from previous year’s winners, refine their presentation skills and serve as a collaborative environment for group submissions.
For even greater relevance to humanitarian goals, students are also asked for ideas that can contribute to fulfilling the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals by 2030.
Each entry will be judged on five core pillars: Public Mobility, Private Mobility, Urban Planning, Connectivity and Sustainability.
Students are asked to integrate their ideas and execution concepts across different academic disciplines, from design and technology, through to user experience, engineering, and business aspects.
They can enter as individuals or as a group, with more than $10,000 combined in cash prizes and a weekend loan of a BMW Group electrified vehicle awarded to first place winners of each category.
Individual category prizes
- 1st—$5,000 (by way of EFT to the bank account nominated by the winner)
- 2nd—$1,000 Apple Store Gift Card
- 3rd—$500 Amazon Gift Card
Team category prizes (prizes awarded to team as a whole)

Wolfgang Buechel, CEO of BMW Group Australia, said he looks forward to viewing the inventive ideas this year’s submissions would bring.
“The YourMelbourne competition has proven to be a highly effective springboard for young people to demonstrate their creativity and knowledge in creating solutions surrounding mobility to enhance our city that are both sustainable and have a practical application,” Mr Buechel said.
“I am looking forward to this year’s competition entries and seeing the future of Melbourne through the perspective of these next-generation visionaries.”
Professor Heath McDonald, Dean of the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing in the College of Business and Law commented, “We are proud and delighted to partner once again with BMW Group Australia for the YourMelbourne competition to shine a spotlight on the futurists at RMIT University and their answers to relevant challenges in our local community.
