Vivid Ideas of Art, Architecture and Light at Grosvenor Place
Harry Seidler & Associates’ principal architect Greg Holman and 32 Hundred Lighting Managing Director Iain Reed will host a highly visual Vivid Ideas discussion on Art Architecture Light to be staged in the dramatic and acclaimed lobby of Seidler’s iconic Grosvenor Place building as part of Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.
Holman will demonstrate some of the multiple award winning lighting features in the Grosvenor Place design and discuss Seidler’s passion for art that is reflected in his work, including the use of light. Along with winning some of the most prestigious awards in architecture, Grosvenor Place earned The Lighting Society Award of Excellence for the building’s lighting scheme in both 2010 and 2011.
The temporary, transient and magical qualities of light as art will be explored in the talk and displayed at Grosvenor Place in an installation by Reed that translates the existing foyer artworks into a lighting display on the entrance of the building. Titled Unfathomable, from Harry Seidler’s own description of the works, the installation will reflect the artistry of Frank Stella’s Cones and Pillars series of artworks that Seidler commissioned for the foyer.
Reed will discuss his enormous body of light art design that has spanned decades of trail blazing event displays and several years of the most dramatic Vivid Sydney installations, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge interactive treatment.
The speakers will also explore the multiple applications of lighting techniques used to enhance and inform amazing architectural spaces.
Now in its seventh year, Vivid Sydney, owned and managed by Destination NSW, the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, is an 18 day festival which transforms the city into a colourful canvas.
Open to the public, tickets cost $10 with refreshments provided. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to The Shepherd Centre – giving deaf children a voice.
Vivid Sydney runs from 22 May to 8 June. Visit www.vividsydney.com.au
