Commitment to Transparency with Over 1000 Environmental Product Declarations
Australia’s largest brick and building products manufacturer, Brickworks, has underscored its leadership in sustainable manufacturing with the release of Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) labels covering more than 1,000 products across its portfolio—an industry-leading initiative designed to bring greater transparency and enable informed decision making when selecting building materials.
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified document that clearly sets out a product’s environmental impact across its entire lifecycle—from raw material extraction through to disposal. It measures key indicators such as carbon emissions, energy use, water consumption and waste generation, giving designers and builders the information they need to make informed, sustainable choices.
With the Australian construction sector facing intensifying scrutiny over its environmental impact, Brickworks’ investment in rigorous, third-party verified EPDs arms architects, builders and developers with reliable data to make lower-carbon material decisions. Each EPD offers a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment, accounting for environmental impacts at every stage of production and use. Brickworks’ EPDs cover a broad range of locally manufactured products including bricks, blocks and pavers, produced at sites across Australia. This latest move builds on the company’s milestone achievement of operating Australia’s first and only certified carbon-neutral brick plant at Austral Bricks Longford, Tasmania.
Brett Ward, General Manager Marketing at Brickworks, says the scale of this release marks a critical moment in the company’s sustainability journey.
“We’re proud to be taking real, measurable steps toward a more sustainable construction industry. These EPDs are rigorous, transparent assessments verified by independent experts.
Our customers want reliable data they can trust, and that’s what we’re committed to delivering,” says Ward.
“As Australia’s largest brick manufacturer, we have a responsibility to lead by example. This isn’t just about reducing our own footprint—it’s about helping the entire industry shift to more sustainable practices. By publishing these declarations, we’re giving specifiers and builders the tools they need to reduce embodied carbon and design more environmentally responsible projects.”
Beyond meeting regulatory requirements, EPDs are increasingly essential for projects seeking ratings under frameworks like Green Star and NABERS’ embodied carbon tool. Brickworks’ initiative means that an impressive 53% of its Australian-made products now offer a Responsible Product Value that can contribute to Green Star Responsible Product Credits—a figure the company is actively working to grow.
Ward says Brickworks’ approach reflects a long-term commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability, not just a one-off announcement.
“We know our products play a critical role in shaping Australia’s built environment for generations. Our investment in EPDs is about accountability and supporting a lower-carbon future. It’s part of a wider, ongoing strategy to make sustainability a core part of how we do business—from our operations to our partnerships with customers and communities.”
For Brickworks, the move is also an invitation to the broader industry to raise the bar. In an era when greenwashing claims abound, initiatives like these demonstrate a willingness to provide the kind of clarity and evidence the market increasingly demands.
