Our cover is a shot of Breathe Architecture’s recently-completed Nightingale 1, a 20-apartment development in Brunswick and the newest addition to the Nightingale family. Like its siblings, this project challenges our preconceptions of multi-residential developments. In this issue, we take a look inside Nightingale 1 and other groundbreaking multi-residential projects that are reconceptualising communal living with sustainability as a priority.

Renaissance is a theme throughout this issue. A modernist home in Brisbane has been given a new lease on life after a reverent and careful restoration by architects Nielsen Jenkins. In Daylesford, Victoria, an old cottage has been modernised by a bold new extension while staying true to its original character. Meanwhile in Sydney, Silvester Fuller has reconfigured their own midcentury apartment and completed it with luminous flourishes of colour.

Down the coast in Victoria, architect Clare Cousins has been enlisted to create a permanent beachside home for a garden-loving client who values seclusion.

One of our garden profiles is a physical (or, rather, ecological) articulation of a Brisbane high school’s spiritual beliefs; while the other is a glimpse inside the gifted mind of landscape designer Phillip Withers.

Finally, be transported to the rolling coastal hills of Catalonia, Spain where we visit a historic, family-owned farmhouse and winery.
