Mygunyah by the Circus

Emulating the significance of balance, Mygunyah by The Circus epitomises modern, multi-generational living. With a rich understanding of texture, heritage and light, this family home is an archival reflection that looks to the future of design, heroing Brickworks materials to bridge modern and heritage elements.

The Melbourne home, designed by Matt Gibson Architecture + Design, takes cues from surrounding Victorian and Edwardian architecture, paying homage to regal detailing in a contemporary fashion. Home to a family of six, with four young children and live-in grandparents, additional bedrooms and points of connection were required to create a spacious environment for its busy residents.

The original building consisted of three distinct pavilions that were connected subtly within this redesign to form a unified, light-filled home. Classic Victorian design defines the first pavilion, with charcoal metal detailing across stately stone. Acting as a bridge between old and new, the second pavilion is contemporary in form, using Brickworks’ Nubrik Traditional Acland Cream bricks as a material echo to the traditional façade. The final pavilion veers west on the property, forming a convivial living space with duplicit connection to the three outdoor gardens that evoke imagery from the Edinburgh Gardens over the road. Inside, the downstairs features formal living and dining areas, along with a kitchen and library section. Moving upwards through the home, existing bedrooms lie within the existing legacy building, while two additional bedrooms occupy the new sections. Brick, both painted white and in its natural form, heroes the interiors, creating cohesion of character between inside and out.

Incorporating an array of tones and textures between the one material allows for visual complexity and a striking tactility across the surface. A standout interior feature is the double-layered cavity brick system that stands proudly in the family room, creating a monochromatic contrast with Austral Bricks La Paloma in Romero.

Mygunyah by The Circus is a thoughtful amalgamation of design, manipulated by Matt Gibson

Architecture + Design to speak to the needs of its modern family while sitting gently into its

surrounding architectural context.
