Ballarat to host bonsai exhibition
Chojo Feature Trees and The Art Gallery of Ballarat collaborate to exhibit a collection of Australia’s most advanced bonsai mixed with a collection of antique Asian ceramics.
Gordon Morrison, the long-time curator of the National Gallery of Victoria has been at the helm in Ballarat since 2004 and has rounded out his career displaying one of the largest collections of art in the country while hosting an impressive array of contemporary artists.
Jeff Barry, owner and curator of Chojo Feature Trees Gallery in Sassafras hosts one of Australia’s finest bonsai collections and is internationally known as one of Australia’s leading bonsai artists. His work is frequently used in exhibitions and advertising as he continues to push the boundaries of contemporary and traditional bonsai.
“Bonsai is an art form that is derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, part of which was then redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism. It is currently practiced across the world and growing exponentially with a particularly strong following in Europe and North America.”
The Art Gallery of Ballarat is Australia’s oldest regional gallery with a remarkably comprehensive collection of Australian art. The heritage-listed gallery building is one of the oldest purpose-built art galleries in the country. It has evolved to accommodate its expanding collection and now includes a range of spaces from grand and elegant 19th century rooms to stunning contemporary additions.
The event will include talks and demonstrations from Bonsai Artist Joe Morgan-Payler, musical performances from Adam Simmons plus sales of bonsai and handmade ceramic pots.
