Sustainable Living Festival 2016

The Sustainable Living Festival is back for its 17th consecutive year, and looks to be bigger and better than ever. Last year the Festival attracted over 100,000 visits and even more are expected over the three-week program as enthusiasm for environmental issues continues to germinate throughout Australia. With such a diverse range of events there will be something to excite and inspire everyone.

The theme of the Festival this year is ‘Embrace It’, where everyone is encouraged to embrace the winds of change. Bask in the power of solar or grip the wheel of an electric vehicle, no matter your interest there’ll be something for you to take hold of, welcoming sustainability with open arms and minds!

The Festival takes a positive and proactive approach to environmentalism. Its programs show that every aspect of everyday life can be changed to not only reduce our impact but also improve our surroundings and so our lifestyles. It can be something as small as turning your backyard into a permaculture success story or as large and ambitious as transforming our entire energy sector and economy.

Following the public momentum created by the Paris climate summit, and with 2016 predicted to be the hottest year on record, there has never been a more fitting time for our society to come together and embrace progress for the better.

THE BIG WEEKEND

While the Festival runs over three weeks, the main highlight is the Big Weekend, staged between the 12th and 14th of February. Held in the cultural hub of Federation Square and Birrarung Marr, the Big Weekend showcases the main attractions of the Festival’s calendar. Featuring interactive workshops, talks, technology demonstrations, art, film and live performance pieces the Big Weekend will appeal to the taste and interests of every visitor.

THE GREEN MARKET

One of the main attractions of the Big Weekend is the Green Market which in 2015 received over 100,000 visitors hungry for knowledge. The Market features over 100 exhibitors, including vendors purveying the very best of organic food, beer and wine. Ethically-sourced clothing, sustainable building designs and gardening options will also be on show. Treadlie and Green Magazine will be back to host their always popular bike market, with bikes, accessories and even a test track to help you make the switch from horsepower to human-power.

STATE OF SUSTAINABILITY

The State of Sustainability events program encourages individuals and communities throughout Victoria to host and promote their own sustainability events, spreading the enthusiasm of sustainability beyond Melbourne to take root throughout the entire nation.
