Yaluk Langa Community Day at Heide Museum of Modern Art

Celebrate the continuing creative culture and traditions of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people – Heide’s Traditional Owners – at the annual Yaluk Langa Community Day being held at Heide Museum of Modern Art on Saturday 7 February.

Held in the Yaluk Langa Gathering Space by the Birrarung at Heide, this free Community Day invites visitors to bring a picnic and spend time together on Country, sharing stories, knowledge and cultural practice in a relaxed outdoor setting.

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people hold an important cultural association to the Birrarung/Yarra River. The Heide grounds and surrounding areas are central to the traditional homelands of their Wurundjeri willam ancestors and creation beliefs. Yaluk Langa (‘River’s Edge’ in Woi-wurrung language) is a collaborative Indigenous landscape project developed between Traditional Owners and the Heide team, providing opportunities for Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people to achieve their responsibilities in caring for Country, what is known as Bunjil’s Law, and to highlight their living culture.

Learn about the Indigenous history of the local landscape and the role everyone can play in Caring for Country from Wurundjeri Elders. Activities include performances by the Djirri Djirri dancers, Marn Grook ‘footy’ games played with a possum fur ball, and nature-based art making.

Yaluk Langa has become a vital and evolving chapter in the Heide story, transforming relationships with Traditional Owners and with the land and waters on which the museum is located, and creating a culturally safe space for learning, gathering, storytelling and reconciliation.
