Welcome to The Living Room

To celebrate Design Tasmania turning 50, we’re hosting a year-long activation of our galleries as “The Living Room”, a shared space for inquiry, making, connection and inspiration, aligning with our founder Gary Cleveland’s original (50-year) vision.

The Living Room will act as a hub for reflection, reconnection, and reimagining of design’s role in shaping Tasmania’s future, prioritising dialogue, experimentation, and engagement within an open, flexible framework of informal programming to include residencies, artist-produced exhibitions, public archive sorting, reading, writing, workshops, panels, meals and events.

Launching the program is Makers: the process, an artist-produced, mini-exhibition by Tasmanian designer and maker Ivett Dodd, centred on her newly published book Makers, celebrating the creative heart of Lutruwita / Tasmania. Featuring work by local makers in various stages of making, the book and exhibition open the process from idea to object.

Join us at Design Tasmania on Thursday 2 April at 5.30pm for an accompanying artist panel convened by Dr Helen Norrie (UTAS), with Tasmanian ceramicists Ben Richardson and Jane Bamford, architectural photographer Martin Mischkulnig (Melbourne) and Ivett, exploring what it takes to bring a vision to life.
