Sydney Edible Garden Trail opens soon
There are fewer than three weeks to go before the Sydney Edible Garden Trail (21 – 22 March),a not for profit weekend self-guided garden trail around more than 60 private and community edible gardens, opens on the North Shore. The mission of the team of volunteer coordinators is to encourage and inspire growing edible produce in urban gardens and public spaces across Sydney. As one of the coordinators, Laurie Green points out, “We want to celebrate the many ways that Sydney residents are creating food security, saving money and the environment, while enjoying the health benefits of home-grown fruit and vegetables.”
If you’ve ever wondered just what’s involved in growing your own food or are interested in finding out more about keeping chickens, growing in drought conditions, crop swapping, worm farms, and more, there’ll be lots of local passionate gardeners ready to share their knowledge.
The trail will showcase sustainable practices such as mulching for water conservation, recycling and composting to increase soil fertility and reduce landfill, planting to encourage bees, home food production to increase food security, and organic growing techniques to reduce chemical use. Some gardens will be holding free workshops, selling seedlings, free seed saving demonstrations, crop swaps and more!
All profits from the event go back into the community in the form of grants to local schools and community groups to support edible gardens. Single or family tickets are available at sydneyediblegardentrail.com.
