Discover South Yarra’s Architectural Tapestry on a Robin Boyd Walking Tour
Take a journey through a slice of South Yarra with the expertly curated Robin Boyd Walking Tour, designed to showcase the precinct’s rich architectural streetscape, hosted by the Robin Boyd Foundation.
This area holds a remarkable legacy of the peoples of the Kulin nation, as well as the work of post-colonial architects, landscape designers, wealthy landowners, and notable residents. South Yarra’s diversity of architectural styles—from early colonial heritage examples to modernism—creates a fascinating and layered streetscape.
It’s also the neighbourhood where Robin Boyd and his family settled in the late 1950s, building his experimental and iconic Walsh Street home. Boyd’s critique of architectural styles and his efforts to preserve built heritage feature prominently throughout the tour, along with an appreciation of the area’s natural landscapes, including the retention of site materials and vegetation.
The architectural tapestry of South Yarra was shaped not only by Boyd but also by leading architects like Reed & Barnes, Harold Desbrowe-Annear, Yuncken Freeman, and Neil Clerehan. Landscape designers such as William Guilfoyle, Edna Walling, and Ellis Stones also left their mark, crafting beautiful outdoor spaces that complement the area’s striking architecture.
The walking tour covers approximately 2.5km and takes up to two hours to complete. While the pace is relaxed, it does include an uphill section of several hundred meters, so moderate fitness is recommended.
The tour begins at the Terrace Café in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, with attendees asked to arrive on time as latecomers will need to catch up with the group. Children under 16 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
Tickets are refundable up to 72 hours before the event, and attendees can transfer their tickets to another person by emailing the organisers. Tours may be rescheduled or refunded in the event of extreme weather. Discounted tickets are available for Robin Boyd Foundation Friends and Boyd Circle members, making it a great opportunity to support the Foundation and experience this insightful exploration of South Yarra.
This event is proudly supported by the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, whose partnership enhances the experience. For more information, visit the Robin Boyd Foundation website.
