NSW Design Residency at the Powerhouse Museum: Applications Now Open

The Powerhouse Museum and Create NSW invite early career NSW designers and makers to apply for the inaugural NSW Design (Early Career) Fellowship – Powerhouse Residency valued at $100,000.

Building on the museum’s vital work in fostering the careers of emerging Australian designers and makers, the program will nurture young talent by providing infrastructure to support studio practice with guidance from industry experts, including experienced practitioners.

Three designers will be supported to undertake a six-month residency and professional development at Powerhouse. Each resident will receive $25,000 in financial support; in-kind mentorship by an established designer relevant to their field; studio space at Powerhouse Ultimo – including access to the museum’s expansive workshop facilities and technicians; and practical connections within the sector to develop their networks and skills.

Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin said this inaugural design residency with Powerhouse will provide an exciting launching pad for emerging talent and become an incubator for leading design created in NSW.
‘Creative problem-solving and innovation are driving forces in the design industry. This investment by the NSW Government provides the next generation of design professionals and makers with expert guidance to foster creativity, refine their skills and instil greater confidence to transform curiosity into cutting-edge design,’ Mr Franklin said.

‘Powerhouse is committed to ensuring the ongoing vitality of the NSW design industry. This residency is an exciting opportunity for emerging designers and makers to accelerate their careers by embedding themselves within the museum’s creative precinct to expand their studio practice.’ said Powerhouse Chief Executive Lisa Havilah.

The residency must take place between July 2023 and December 2024. Each resident will produce a new work of during this period. Applications are open now and close Monday 13 March 2023. Applicants are encouraged to review the Powerhouse Climate Action Plan and incorporate sustainable thinking and practice in their applications.
