Issue 93

Issue 93 comes out 7 September. Order on its own or as part of a subscription.

In issue 93 we look at five homes that carefully consider – and celebrate – their modest size.

But up first, we profile Cone 11’s partners in work and in life, Ilona Topolcsanyi and Colin Hopkins, who have carved out an increasingly successful niche creating handmade ceramics in their Melbourne studio.

Next up, with an architect and a builder for owners, this Blue Mountains cabin was primed to gather itself up from its immediate surrounds, with architecture by Sally Meaton.green magazine issue 93

For our third house feature; a couple and their young daughter have a new home, built as a second-storey addition to their parent’s ground floor bungalow. This simple decision has created an intelligent, stacked solution without sacrificing the beautiful garden out back. Architecture by SAHA.

Next up, Nightingale Evergreen by Clare Cousins Architects, a major chapter in the story of developing well-designed and affordable housing that run counter to urban sprawl and ticky-tacky builds.

And for our final house feature; a modular dwelling designed to expand, change and move along with its owners serves as a creative, modest and logical solution to the difficulties of combining lifestyle with home ownership. Architecture by New Zealand’s William Samuels Architects.

For our garden features, we look at two gardens that fulfil our collective craving for bigger spaces in which to relax and nurture.

First up, Banksia House Garden; a unique garden design that gathers family and friends into holiday mode, creating the ultimate staycation, by 7b Landscapes and Interiors, and architecture by Dragi Majstorovic.

Next, a Melbourne garden that performs acrobatics to find sun and, in doing so, becomes a healthy home for creatures great and small, and an engine room for many a meal. Landscape design by Chin Liew Studio and architecture by Austin Maynard Architects.

And of course, our regular segments Upfront and Upfront Garden share a curated spread of projects, products or creations that we love. Plus, explore this issue’s Permaculture Tips, and the Peter Zumthor studio and house (1988 & 2005, Haldenstein, Switzerland) by Peter Zumthor in What I Like About You, brought to us by Lindy Atkin and Stephen Guthrie’s (Bark Architects).
