The 2022 Australian Timber Design Awards featured a diverse range of outstanding timber residential, commercial and public projects.

 

This special ‘case-study-focused’ WoodSolutions seminar will present a rich selection of the award-winning local and interstate projects and the overall 2022 Australian Timber Design Award winners.

 

Each case study will be presented by the principal project architect, designer or system supplier, who will discuss not only the design, specification and construction details of these exemplar projects, but also the timber design processes and philosophies of these leading design practices.

Christopher Grinham, Director of H&E Architects

The winner of the overall Excellence in Timber Design Award for 2022 was the momentous Waterfront Tavern. Director of H&E Architects, Chris Grinham, will discuss the functional brief of the commercial project. In homage to its maritime setting, the design developed as a contemporary interpretation of a timber boat house. The discussion will touch on the crafted use of timber throughout the development to create a unique and memorable response to brief and context.

Andrew Tripet, National Sector Lead Community at NBRS

Excellence in Timber Design – 2022 People’s Choice Andrew Tripet, National Sector Lead Community at NBRS will discuss The People’s Choice project for 2022 – the Bay Pavilion Arts and Aquatic Centre in Bateman’s Bay – a project that magnificently showcases timber in its structure, façade, and internal finishing and how it can be used to maximise beauty and functionality and minimise embodied energy impacts, whilst creating iconic and dramatic architectural forms.

Veryan Curnow, Associate Director at JCBA

Excellence in Timber Design – Public Building With bold elevations draped in timber and sitting strongly in the natural seaside bushland is the new Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club. JCBA Assoc Director Veryan Curnow will discuss this spectacular multi-faceted community facility which features sustainably sourced Australian hardwoods internally and externally for their exquisite beauty, practicality, performance, durability, and bushfire resistance.

S.E.E.D. – Modular Classrooms

Knut Menden, Director of Betti & Knut Architecture

Excellence in Timber Design – Sustainability and also Small Budget Winning both the Small Budget and Sustainability Awards was the S.E.ED. – Modular Classrooms project. Knut Menden Director of Betti & Knut Architecture will discuss this innovative solution that total rethinks the ‘demountable’ and provides not only cost effective prefabricated portable classrooms, but also amazingly beautiful and tranquil, internally & externally, high-quality, scalable educational buildings.

Marc Bernstein, Director of Melbourne Design Studios

Excellence in Timber Design – Residential Class 1 – New Buildings Director of Melbourne Design Studios Marc Bernstein will present The Hutt 01 Passive House project a wonderful case study in ‘how to build better houses sustainably’. Combining advanced technologies and functionality with the beauty of materials, this project utilises PassivHaus prefabricated thermal bridge-free biophilic-rich timber building solutions along with playful features to deliver a fun and sustainable home.

Iron Creek Bay Farm Stay, Sorell, Tas

Grant Steel, Business Development Manager, XLam

Excellence in Timber Design – Multi-Residential Responding to the landscape Iron Creek Bay Farm Stay is an impressive multi-residential project which incorporates a rich palette of plantation and native forest timbers. Prefabricated cross laminated timber (CLT) is also used extensively both structurally and aesthetically, providing an innovative multi-beneficial solution which will be discussed by Grant Steel, Business Development Manager XLam.
