Mystery Bay House, NSW
A project by Jack Hawkins Architect, Award Finalist and featured on Grand Designs Australia
Rob and Sally Hawkins’ brand new home is located on the Sapphire Coast of NSW and faces Mount Gulaga, a sacred place to the Yuin nation. Their completely off-the-grid home pays tribute and respect to the land it was built on.
Their son, Jack Hawkins, designed Mystery Bay House with Rob, who is also an Architect, to create a home that is equal parts outdoor and indoor. As seen in the photos, their home allows for a seamless transition from inside to outside.
The house was also designed to work with the land and its surroundings. For example, Jack designed and handmade the 16 wall size pivoting screens which provides protection from strong winds. As a result, The Hawkins can easily enjoy the landscape from their home while being protected from the weather.
Water is collected and stored on-site in 160,000L worth of water tanks. This includes 6 x Kingspan Round Made to Measure water tanks in Monument. To protect the home from bushfires, 30,000L of water is reserved for firefighting purposes.
Mystery Bay Home is a truly magnificent project which is equally beautiful, practical and sustainable. It comes as no surprise that Mystery Bay House has been featured in Grand Designs Australia 2021 and was listed as a finalist in two categories of the 2021 Australian Institute of Architects’ NSW awards program; Houses (New) and Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture.
