Built Environment Projects Shine as Banksia Awards 2025 Finalists Announced

Finalists in the Built Environment and Infrastructure category at Australia’s most prestigious sustainability awards have been announced, recognising outstanding social housing, infrastructure, and redevelopment projects in the 36th Banksia National Sustainability Awards.

This year’s finalists demonstrate how sustainable design and innovation can create lasting benefits for communities and the environment.

Finalists include:

  • Bridge Housing’s Glebe Aboriginal Women’s Housing project, which upgraded an ageing inner-city unit block to deliver sustainable, secure, and affordable homes for Aboriginal women and children.
  • Porous Lane’s innovative use of end-of-life tyres as aggregate to support healthier waterways, cooler cities, and a circular economy by improving groundwater storage.
  • McConnell Dowell Construction’s level-crossing removal project on Mount Derrimut Road in Deer Park, which deeply integrated local First Nations stories into the built form, setting a benchmark for Traditional Owner engagement during the planning phase.
  • Vicinity Centres’ groundbreaking redevelopment of Chadstone Place, which transformed the centre into an Australian-first net-zero carbon environment, enhancing employee experience while delivering exceptional financial and environmental results.

“These finalists have all used sustainable practices to not only create beautiful spaces and precincts, but a lasting legacy for the communities that will use them,” said Banksia Foundation CEO Graz van Egmond.

Winners of the 36th Banksia National Sustainability Awards will be announced at a gala dinner on Thursday 3 April 2025.
