Ceramic Studios Across Australia Open Their Doors for Australian Ceramics Open Studios 2025
Across one weekend in November, ceramic artists and studios nationwide will open their doors for Australian Ceramics Open Studios 2025.
Held on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 November, 10am–4pm, the event features more than 170 ceramicists offering demonstrations, studio tours, kiln firings, hands-on workshops, work for sale and warm conversation. Entry is free and family-friendly.
Making with clay is part of the human story from ancient times — and it’s thriving in Australia right now. Pottery classes are booming, restaurants are embracing locally made tableware, galleries are showing ceramic art and markets are brimming with colourful, characterful pieces. Across the ACOS weekend, some studios will join forces to create local trails for visitors to follow, while others will offer making experiences and behind-the-scenes insights.
Artists involved are members of The Australian Ceramics Association (TACA), which marks its 70th year in 2025. A not-for-profit, grassroots organisation dedicated to elevating ceramics in Australian culture, TACA has published The Journal of Australian Ceramics for over 60 years and supports members to promote their work, build skills and connect with the national ceramics community.
Visitors can expect personal, process-led encounters. As ACOS participants note, “Visitors are looking for a hidden experience,” and “We held mini workshops, plus had studio members on the wheels so visitors could watch.” Others highlight the appeal of process and place: “Visitors were interested to see photographs of my kiln and hear about how the work is woodfired,” and “I was handbuilding a large piece during the weekend.”
For many makers, the conversations are as valuable as the craft itself. As Minna Graham (Daylesford, VIC) reflects, “I often find I have more authentic exchanges with people who have taken the time to come and visit me. They ask all sorts of questions that you wouldn’t normally get in a chance encounter in somewhere like a market. I have gotten to know a lot of my local community, neighbours that had no idea that I was here with my studio and arts practice before they saw the sign and came to visit.”
