At Home With The Architect
Explore an award winning off the grid residence at Metcalfe. The AAA’s Victorian At Home With The Architect open house series explores the country home of architect Jeremy Wolveridge on Saturday 28 November. Meet the architect and discover how the interiors and exteriors of Hills Plain House were designed and constructed.
As the architect and client, Jeremy Wolveridge set clear goals for the design and construction of this project. For his practice Wolveridge Architects, who are experienced in passive design, the residence was an opportunity to engage further with principles of sustainable design and systems and obtain a firsthand experience in the realities, technical considerations and benefits of a house that is designed with such.
Already this experience has been invaluable towards their clients’ work, where sustainable design decisions and recommendations can be made with greater confidence. Wolveridge Architects excite and encourage their clients to invest in sustainable architecture. Their firm also built the dwelling.
The site is about an hour and ten minutes from Melbourne and they generally employed local trades with weekly meetings. The owner/builder approach enabled them to consider alternatives that were often proposed by subcontractors during the process without cost penalty. This flexibility enabled them to continue to improve the design.
In addition to its systems, this project incorporates a great deal of recycled/reforested and considered materials that are intended to provide a tactile experience for the occupant and visitor. Constant reminders, not just of their previous life, but the long and drawn out construction process integrate this holistic approach.
