Trending Timbers by Intergrain

More than just floors, the latest in global design trends is seeing timber being used on virtually every surface imaginable across both residential and commercial spaces. From panelling and cladding through to joinery and furniture, timber is shaping the design landscape in 2015 as professionals and homeowners introduce timbers to add warmth to any space.

Intergrain Trade Brand Manager, Amanda Chalmers said architects, design professionals and specifiers across the building and landscaping industries are experimenting with new uses of timber to create innovative and design-leading interiors and exteriors.

“The aesthetic appeal of timber – particularly as our outdoors become an extension of our indoors – combined with sustainability factors has contributed to its increased popularity in recent years. We have seen this through our Intergrain Timber Vision Awards program where entries continue to display timber as a key feature throughout buildings.”

Not only does timber bring warmth and character to the space, it’s also an extremely cost effective and environmentally hardwearing material that can withstand the tough rigour of commercial and residential use.

“Consequently, we are seeing more and more industry professionals and designers capitalising on timber’s sustainability credentials in preference to other building materials,” said Chalmers.

“And the prevalence of timbers being used by homeowners to create stunning interiors and outdoor entertaining areas has also been amplified by popular reality TV shows like The Block – where timber features heavily in the weekly room reveals,” she said.

Selecting the right woodcare finishes and and stains is essetial in maintaining the natural beauty of timber, while also maintaining the natural beauty of timber, while also enhancing the variations of timber species.

Moisture is the number one enemy of timber, coatings help to prevent premature degradation by splitting and rotting, by creating a barrier that helps to stop moisture getting in to the timber.

Intergrain products achieve this through innovative water based technology which allows coatings to weather naturally to maintain a superior finish over the long term.

“Contrary to popular belief, traditional oil based coatings penetrate into the timber surface to nourish the timber, but because they do not create a film, they degrade quickly and need regular recoating more often than water based coatings. They also yellow with time when used indoors,” said Chalmers.

Intergrain’s water based products have been designed to maintain the natural beauty of all timbers, including treated and recycled, with minimal fuss and with the environment in mind. Designed to weather naturally by gradually eroding, Intergrain UltraDeck and NaturalStain is designed to not blister, flake or peel, and lasts up to three times longer than traditional oil based timber finishes. They penetrate into the surface to nourish the timber, while forming an invisible film to help seal the pores on the surface and provide long lasting protection. All Intergrain products are tested in Australia to ensure they withstand Australia’s harsh weather conditions.

With Intergrain UltraDeck and NaturalStain maintenance is simple with no need to sand back the coating. They are low VOC and have very little odour, making them safer to use and much gentler on the environment than traditional oil based coatings.
