40 years 40 designers
In 1976 Gary Cleveland presented a vision: ‘to establish in the minds of a large proportion of the world’s population that the word ‘Tasmania’ is synonymous with good design and reliable craftsmanship’.
Forty years on, Design Tasmania remains committed to that vision by supporting, promoting and guiding designers and master artisans on a local, national and international platform. To coincide with their 40th birthday Design Tasmania have engaged 40 individual designers and makers to exhibit a design that embodies a unique aspect of the Tasmanian landscape and from an environment that inspires and shapes design.
40 years 40 designers has been divided into two parts in order to do justice to the remarkable work of the many designers and makers who have been involved with Design Tasmania and their exhibition program. The first iteration is on view from March to June 2016 and the second from December to February 2017.
The exhibition showcases the work of designers who were part of the initial foundation of Design Tasmania in Launceston and have remained faithful ambassadors for over forty years. Sitting alongside them are more recent contemporaries who are forging careers as designers and makers.
All participants were asked to respond to their personal relationships with the Tasmanian environment and create a dialogue through materials and form that best represents their narratives. 40 years 40 designers invite you to enter into their dialogue via the diverse, innovative and superbly executed pieces in this commemorative exhibition.
