Roji Respite

With a lovely brief to reflect the philosophies of the surrounding development as well as the products used in the salon, Craig Tan Architects was asked to include “a connection to nature, sustainability and the use of organic ingredients and natural materials” in their recent project. The Roji Salon is entered from the lounge of Hotel Hotel in the NewActon Nishi Development in Canberra, designed by March Studio. Natural light raw materials and sound-absorbing cork in the basin area ensured a sumptuous experience. A “roji” path is a term used for the entrance to a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, and the idea of slipping out of the “everyday world” into a relaxing retreat was so exactly what the owner Jason Hartwig had in mind that when it was discussed in the first meeting with his architect, he decided to name his salon after it.
