Come Together
Free to Feed is a not-for-profit social enterprise that brings together refugees, people seeking asylum and new migrants to celebrate their stories and cultures through food-oriented initiatives. Circle Studio Architects was given a brief to create a flexible space that could adapt to varying requirements while embodying the inviting and communal spirit that defines Free to Feed. Observes Circle Studio of the project: “The budget was small, but the ideas were big.”
“Colour became key to creating the mood,” explains Yvonne Meng. “You don’t have to do a lot to make an impact – do little, but do it well.” And that they did. To keep labour costs and wastage at a minimum, furniture and joinery were cut wholly from standard sheets – a tactical decision that meant the space can be packed away completely and configured as required.
Another practical masterstroke is the installation of general power outlets in striking pendant lights donated by Anchor Ceramics. A mural by Spencer Harrison ties the space together with a touch of playfulness.
