MINI Portraits: Olaver Architecture

MINI LIVING – INVERT 3.0 will bring together architects and RMIT architecture students to explore the potential of our laneways. In the lead-up to the exhibition, we’ve asked participating architects to give us a tour of their favourite Melbourne laneway. Watch the video and read the transcript of Emlyn Olaver from Olaver Architecture’s tour of Little Gore St, Fitzroy.

Emlyn Olaver: “I feel like I’ve got some sort of connection to Little Gore St … my mum actually worked in this building on the corner and I used to come here as a little kid and I can remember running around. I actually remember running through that sky bridge – I think it was like filing in there – and playing with Lego.

The mixture of typologies in the laneway also really appeals to me. Being … this old warehouse building that’s been repurposed as a mixture of residences and offices and all sorts of things.

And just seeing everyone’s little personal touch, like timber covering the gas meter here and then a standard electrical box here with some good street art.

… We can see here Boston ivy [is] pretty prevalent but also some more considered plantings going on around the place is pretty nice.

This kindergarten here, or childcare centre – I love hearing the sound of the little kids’ voices in there and then little glimpses of what’s going on in there with their ‘no standing’ signs which is pretty cool.

And then, of course, this amazing tree at the end of the laneway is pretty phenomenal.”

Stay tuned for more MINI Portraits. MINI LIVING – INVERT 3.0 will be presented from 13 – 17 November at Rapha Melbourne, 32 Guildford Lane.
