Mike Hewson to be guest speaker at Landscape Australia Conference

Prominent New Zealand born, New York-based artist Mike Hewson has been announced as a guest speaker at this year’sĀ Landscape Australia Conference, which will be heldĀ at the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building at the University of Technology, Sydney on Saturday 5 May.

Hewson specialises in work that blurs the distinction between art and architecture, with a particular focus on civic spaces. Recently, he completed a large-scale commission calledĀ Illawarra Placed Landscape for the Wollongong civic centre which includes a 17-metre-tall “palm pole” and palm seats alongside rock formations from local sandstone.

Hewson’sĀ previous projects demonstrate the skilful marriage of artistic values, cultural narratives and public spaces such asĀ Dim MirrorĀ in Moscow, Russia ā€“ an installation that questions the relationship between tourism and photography ā€“ andĀ Homage to the Lost Spaces Series, a series of digital prints that reference the interior of a school damaged in the Christchurch earthquake.
