DESIGN Canberra announces designer lineup for opening party and auction

DESIGN Canberra is giving design-lovers the chance to have their own piece of contemporary Canberra design with the festival’s second annual design auction at the festival opening party. Selected artists and featured works have been announced and bidding is now open.

Limited edition and one-off pieces from Canberra’s leading designers are now open for bidding on the auction website. See work by Phoebe Porter, Alison Jackson, Zoe Brand, Katie Ann Houghton, Madisyn Zabel, Chelsea Lemon, Elliot Bastianon, Rolf Barfoed, Tom Skeehan, Rene Linnsen, Peter Bollington, Richilde Flavell, Megan Hinton and Marilou Chagnaud.

“We have selected some of the most exciting designers from the Canberra region across a range of mediums to feature new work in the 2018 DESIGN Canberra festival opening party and auction. Last year’s event was a huge success – with 24 of the 26 works selling on the night – and CIRCULARITY in 2018 will be no exception,” said Rachael Coghlan CEO of Craft ACT and Artistic Director of DESIGN Canberra 2018.

The online auction is now live at 32auctions.com/designcanberra2018. Bidding will be open until Saturday 10 November at around 9.30pm. Works will be on show at Level 1 Monaro Mall, Canberra Centre, in the week leading up to the auction.

The festival opening party is one of the biggest events of the DESIGN Canberra festival program and everyone is invited. The 2017 party booked out so design lovers are encouraged to purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment. The 2018 event will feature music, food, local wines, cocktails and brews and experimental lighting design. Plus there’ll be lucky door prizes of an iconic F!NK jug, wines, brews and gift vouchers.

The 2018 DESIGN Canberra opening party will celebrate the circularity of the city – so much more than roundabouts, the circle represents continuity and strength. Pure and simple, the circle embodies infinite possibilities. In Canberra, we live, work and make here in the Canberra region, we create a vibrant and creative community for everyone to enjoy.

The iconic Monaro Mall was selected as the venue for the opening party and auction after it picked up multiple awards in this year’s Australian Institute of Architects awards (ACT Branch). Listed for more than thirty years on the ACT register of significant twentieth century architecture, Whitehead and Payne Architects’ 1963 Monaro Mall was Australia’s first fully enclosed shopping mall. Its recent retail transformation by Universal Design Studio and Mather Architecture demonstrates the powerful potential of adaptive reuse of heritage buildings over demolition. It is the perfect venue for this signature 2018 DESIGN Canberra event.
