Front / Centre at Denfair 2019
Denfair’s Front / Centre competition has returned for 2019, reaffirming a commendable commitment to Australian emerging design and creating accessible pathways for those who create it. We’ve selected a few standouts from this year’s finalists.
Makiko Ryujin
The “Shinki Burning Vessels” are concerned with the uncontrolled, transformative nature of fire. After fashioning the timber pieces, Makiko surrenders her work to the flames and the result is something spectacular.
Mathieu Cottin
French-born Mathieu aims to create furniture that generates interest. “Astro” certainly does just that – its two front doors are encrusted with leather, adding texture to this eye-catching geometric design.
Stephen Roy
Stephen Roy describes the “The Arc Wardrobe” as “a minimalist response to today’s growing trend in semi-permanent living”. The piece’s sweeping curves, luxurious full-length bronze mirror and patterned framework possess an enduring beauty.
Tom Hewitt
The “Elk outdoor dining chair” is minimalism at its best. An ultra-refined form rendered in black powder–coated steel, we imagine it would meld seamlessly into any backyard.
Adrian Olasau
They say the devil is in the details, but the beauty is too. “C.O Stool” is an all-too-inviting perch crafted out of American oak with a natural oil finish.
Dustin Fritsche
“Clearer – Coffee Table” remains true to Softer Studio’s refined yet playful aesthetic while subtly showcasing its materials: tinted glass and American oak.
Daniel Margules
The “Kodo Hat & Coat Stand” takes inspiration from Scandinavian design, delivering big-time on functionality with a steel shelf plus a variety of hooks for hanging space.
Hustwaite Butcher
The “HB Media tower” houses a turntable, records and speakers on articulated outriggers. Designed to be repurposed into the future, any number of shelves can be installed at any height and frequency.
