Winners: ArchiTeam Awards 2020

The 2020 ArchiTeam Awards and Exhibition, in their 13th year, have been redesigned to be completely virtual. ArchiTeam has worked with members to totally re-imagine the awards exhibition, in an innovative and truly unique way.

“As is true for many businesses, 2020 has been a tough year for architects,” says ArchiTeam CEO, Phoebe La Gerche-Wijsman, “but our members are uniquely placed to respond and adapt to these times. With Victorian members being affected by statewide lockdowns, even getting photography together for this year’s entries was a massive task. Despite this, the 2020 ArchiTeam awards received an outstanding 130 entries, and our members rose to the challenge to create a whole new concept in exhibition design.”

The finalists of each category will have their award entry displayed in a 3D gallery space. The public will navigate through the space which has been designed by a selection of ArchiTeam members. Built using the same CAD programs architects use to design buildings, the 3D models can be navigated using the Google Street View API – a familiar interface for most of us nowadays. “ArchiTeam has always looked at things differently,” explains Director, Jamie Sormann. “Our members are small practices, who know how to combine open-source tools with cutting-edge design software to deliver outstanding design, so we are always going to be a little unpredictable, in the best way. We saw the challenges presented by 2020, namely the loss of the in-person exhibition, and turned them into an opportunity to increase accessibility; and have some fun in the process.”

From the interior of a fortune cookie, to a shingled tunnel, attendees will be able to click through to each gallery ‘room’ and explore all submissions before the winners are announced. The ‘gallery space’ will be free to visit and accessible to anyone to experience and view all entries.

“This year we are beyond excited by the calibre of work,” says La Gerche-Wijsman. “The new format of the awards ensures our exhibition will be seen by more of the public than ever before.”
