Kiama holiday home by Minosa Design | Award Winner

This holiday home located in Kiama on the south coast of NSW was originally a 60’s fibro weatherboard clad two bedder. It has since been sensationally transformed by Minosa Design to suit the needs of a family with three daughters and plenty of friends. The client brief involved creating a relaxed and social environment to enjoy not for the occasional visit but for regular and lengthy stays. This meant holiday home comfort and everyday practicality all rolled into one.

First and foremost the clients engaged Minosa to spatially plan their ‘living areas’. The star of the renovation project is the kitchen in which Minosa Design were awarded the KBDi NSW kitchen design of the year for 2015. The owners wanted a communal and unpretentious kitchen to encourage everyone including family and guests to congregate. The one off design is robust and well organised yet very playful with pastels and bold black finishes.

Mafi timber was selected in Oak Country Brushed Natural Oil for its incredibly hardwearing nature and ability to be used over underfloor heating. Materials that required effortless cleaning and could cope with sunshine were a big necessity for the clients who wanted to spend less time maintaining and more time enjoying the holiday home.

The heated mafi oak floor makes it all that much easier to kick back and cosy up. Mafi are the only timber flooring supplier in Australia to guarantee wooden flooring installed directly onto the heated element and we have over 30 years experience in doing so.

Mafi floors are finished with a 100% natural oil and won’t yellow from UV light. Artificial plastic coatings including lacquers or polyurethane on flooring often discolour with exposure to UV light. Mafi’s carefree maintenance involves washing the floor with mafi oil soap and leaving the natural plant oils and fats to soak in, strengthening and moisturising the wood. Mafi floors are designed to get stronger over time. Lacquers or UV hardened polyurethane coatings will work in the opposite way and only block the pores and as a result weaken the timber underneath.

A warm palette of materials was key to achieving a comfortable and relaxed vibe. Mafi Oak stairsand a custom designed bench seat match the flooring throughout the kitchen and living spaces.
