Hakuu – Deep-Char Japanese Yakisugi Cladding

Hakuu is the traditional, unglazed Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) finish, where the flame-charred surface is left intact. The result is a striking black facade with deep texture and the strongest natural protection against the elements. Genuine sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) is charred in Japan, then finished in our Melbourne workshop for Australian conditions. Suited to bold exterior facades and interior feature walls. Available in Hakuu Natural, Hakuu Black and Hakuu Patina.

Green Credentials

Genuine Japanese sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) from certified Japanese forests. The Yakisugi charring process is chemical-free: the carbonised surface is the weatherproofing, eliminating synthetic preservatives, biocides and coatings entirely. Carbon-sequestering structural timber, long service life (decades), and naturally biodegradable at end of life.
