Barangaroo South wins Sustainable Construction Award at ACA 2019

Lendlease’s Barangaroo South has won the Sustainable Construction Award at the Australian Construction Awards 2019 for its efforts to improve retailer energy efficiency with The Footprint Company, which exists to reduce the carbon footprint of property by providing simple, online life cycle tools, products and information.

The Footprint Company and Lendlease Urban Regeneration lead the initiative for the new Barangaroo South precinct, one of Sydney’s largest urban renewal projects that has been internationally praised for its application of sustainable technologies.

Despite the fact that Australian retail operations account for about 41 per cent of total non-residential carbon emissions per annum and only occupy only 14 per cent of all floor area, retail tenancies are virtually unregulated from an energy efficiency perspective.

With this information in mind, The Footprint Company and Lendlease sought to increase the efficiency of retailers in Barangaroo South.

As a result of their efforts, enough energy has been saved each year to power 740 apartments (95 per cent of the apartments in the precinct). The initiative was also commended for introducing 100 per cent compostable packaging across the precinct.

The ACA submission noted: “These results demonstrate the economic and environmental value of retail energy efficiency and shows that substantial improvement in this and other sustainable practices is feasible.”

The Sustainable Construction Award recognises “outstanding achievement and success in implementing a sustainable strategy during building projects.”
