One a Day Exhibition
Contemporary Australian artist Shona Wilson has built her 25 year practice around a daily engagement with nature. Using found natural materials to create sculptural assemblages, she invites the viewer to marvel and wonder at the myriad details found within nature.
Shona’s latest exhibition at Mossgreen Gallery is a project titled, ‘One a Day’. Producing one ephemeral artwork each day, over the course of a year, Shona has shared each image through her Instagram account giving us insight into the relationship and the dialogue she has with nature. Each meditative-like image shared @shonawilson, includes hashtags to describe what the artist sees through the lens and the feelings surrounding her subjects of nature.
By paring modern online platforms with traditional forms of beauty, Shona awakens us to the scale of and possibilities with nature. Each work speaks great ecological significance – demonstrating the interdependence of the natural world; how nature avoids waste; how we can recycle nature; and how the detritus of nature is beautiful.
The roots of Shona’s ‘One a Day’ project reach back to the beginning of her professional practice when she first discovered Land Art and Ephemeral Art. Acknowledging nature as her greatest inspirer, co-creator and teacher, Shona describes;
‘Nature’s materials as storehouses of knowledge, information and energy; explaining they have become like a ‘set of keys’ for me, unlocking doors to memory, science, history, imagination and spirit’.
Georgina Reid, founder of The Plant Hunter, will officially open ‘One a Day’ exhibition and the exclusive Book launch on 11th November 2015. Georgina, who also shares Shona’s love of nature, first came across the ‘One a Day’ project on Instagram and was instantly transfixed by the artist’s ability to capture a graceful truth and richness of the natural world.
To complete the ‘One a Day’ project, Shona Wilson has created a book which includes each of the 365 photographs featured in the exhibition that will be available for purchase.
With sought-after solo shows nationally since 1991, Shona has achieved both commercial and private success, with collections at Artbank, many regional galleries and significant private acquisitions.
