Our first architecture feature, ‘Memory Box’; on Victoria’s Surf Coast, an architect and builder starting their family eschew the usual ‘think big’ approach for gradual interventions that revive a tiny, ‘trashed’ rental, preserving its simplicity and memories. In this issue, we profile designer, researcher and educator Guy Keulemans, whose newly published book Transformative Repair brings together decades of research into the joyful idea that broken objects can be reimagined and improved through repair. With text by Lara Chapman and photography by Connor Patterson and Rosina Possingham.

Our second architecture feature, ‘With Time’; a long time in the thinking and making, this family home extends into a space that honours the existing trees and prioritises small, value-driven design decisions over expansive ones. With text by Lara Chapman and photography by Ben Hosking.

Our third architecture feature; ‘Double Darlings’ is filled with exceptional moments across two street frontages, the fine-grained nature of the inner city is mirrored in this Darlinghurst home. This is no ordinary building. With text by Penny Craswell and photography by Tom Ross.

Next up; ‘2 Good’ is a beguiling heritage update by a builder and architect who understand the power of soulful interventions to transform, uplift and complete. Mirrored pods linked by a lush central garden create connection or separation, while adaptable spaces respond to changing family needs. With text by Kath Dolan and photography by Tess Kelly.

Our final architecture feature; ‘Laneway Leaning’ is a small addition to a house in Sydney’s Inner West that proves good design can make an impact, contributing a cheerful façade to a residential back lane and bringing the laneway to life through careful selection of materials, form and colours. With text by Penny Craswell and photography by Martin Siegner.

Our first landscape feature looks to ‘Perched’, where a trio of incredible views, famous architecture and a labour-of-love garden combine in a clifftop Melbourne property. Almost exclusively native, the garden by Andrew Moulton makes the most of its spectacular position overlooking the Yarra River and Yarra Bend Park, with many planting choices made with local wildlife in mind. With text by Jenny Lyon and photography by Tamsin O’Neill.

And our second landscape feature explores ‘Catch & Release’, a community-centred wetlands park transforming a decommissioned sewage treatment plant into a park, playground, community centre and nursery, as part of a larger project regenerating a creek catchment in the middle of Brisbane and returning land to nature and the community. With text by Penny Craswell and photography by Christopher Frederick Jones.

In our Not Wasted feature, ‘Pooled Resources’, a former municipal pool in Whanganui is transformed into a family home, urban orchard, food garden and sunken patio, retaining familiar traces of the public pool while bringing productive gardens, biodiversity and renewed community activity to a neglected urban void. With text by Ellie Keft and photography by Simon Wilson.

And finally, our travel feature visits ‘Kata Tjuṯa to Uluṟu’, a five-day walk immersed in this semi-arid environment, with iconic monoliths as sentinels and timeless stories reverberating through the landscape. Guided by local Aṉangu custodians, the walk connects land, sky, flora and fauna, Country, people and law. With text by Tom Bodycomb.
