Our Sydney Architecture Festival picks

The 13th Sydney Architecture Festival is around the corner. The week-long festival runs from 11-17 November 2019 and we’ve taken the liberty of singling out a few interesting events from this year’s diverse program, which revolves around the theme of Making. Housing. Affordable.

1:1 Public Workshop

The Australian dream of owning a home is changing. Many homeowners want to live close to urban centres, but how accessible is this dream? What are we willing to change and sacrifice in our lives in order to buy a home?

Join this interactive workshop exploring the changing landscape of residential housing in Sydney, where you will be working in small groups of five and, using coloured tape, projecting your group’s vision of a first homebuyer’s bedroom in Sydney.

When: 10am – 1pm / Monday 11 November

Architecture Street presents “Affordable Housing: Potential and Possibilities”

Everyone deserves a safe and comfortable place to live. In the past hundred years or so the challenge of housing has been intensified by the increasing complexity and density of urban life. This special edition of the Architecture Street talks coincides with the Sydney Architecture Festival to explore the potential and possibilities for housing affordability in the Inner West.

Gabrielle Suhr and Charles Peters from SJB Architects will present their Illawarra Road project, a mixed-use affordable rental co-housing scheme in partnership with Fresh Hope and Nightingale Housing, located in Marrickville.

When: 6:30pm – 8:30pm / Wednesday 13 November

Alternative Housing Ideas: ‘Reimagining How We Live’

The Alternative Housing Ideas Challenge attracted international recognition with over 230 submissions. The panel of experts shortlisted seven finalists from Australia and around the world. The best filled the brief to increase alternative and affordable housing supply across the city and reduce housing stress. The models ranged from financing, design, building, ownership and management and are expected to provide the city with lessons for future projects.

On 15 November, as part of the Sydney Architectural Festival, these seven shortlisted finalists will give an insight into their ideas and the inspiration behind their work. With a panel of experts, examine scalability, applicability, assess feasibility and discuss what the future of housing could look like.

When: 6pm – 8pm / Friday 15 November

Cheaper ≠ affordable

Local Illawarra architects have banded together to create a satellite event to this year’s Sydney Architecture Festival. Titled ‘Cheaper ≠ affordable’, you are invited to meet architects and others about addressing the problem of housing affordability. Other speakers will include members of the construction, real estate and prefab industries.

At the end of the afternoon, a panel session moderated by renowned local digital craftsperson Marcus Piper will give the public the opportunity to ask questions to the expert panel on all things affordable housing and more.

In the front yard of the Institute Hall, kids will battle it out to build the tallest wooden block tower for a prize and for those who need to whet their whistles can enjoy a cold beer from local brewers, the coal coast brewery.

When: 12pm – 7pm / Sunday 17 November
