From Nature 2018 at Gasworks Arts Park

Emerging from the ground, tree trunks, branches and walls, living sculptures will offer a window into the imagination. From Nature will showcase living sculptures and organic land artwork, transforming parkland into an outdoor open-air gallery at Gasworks Arts Park from Saturday 3 November until Sunday 11 November.

The only exhibition of its kind in Australia, From Nature gives art and environmental lovers the opportunity to view and experience land art; art that has been made directly with the landscape by sculpting the land or creating structures using purely natural materials. The displayed artworks will be created entirely or in part onsite. From Nature is a celebration of land art that enables the public to experience the power of art outside the formality of a traditional gallery – perfect for even the most inexperienced art enthusiast.

This year From Nature is featuring the works of 30 artists. When designing their pieces, each artist was asked to place an emphasis on sustainability and reflect on the manner by which their sculptures will return to the earth. The exhibition aims to embrace nature’s beauty in a sustainable manner, and draw attention to environmental discussions.

From Nature attracts professional sculptors, emerging artists and local children from Albert Park Primary School and Albert Park Pre-School who are united in creativity and exploration.

With the uniqueness of each piece and such an extensive range of sculptures and environmental messages, From Nature is not to be missed.

“The entries are all infused with a desire to respect and honour nature, as they are every year. The installations range from big and bold, to quietly powerful,” says curator Tracey McIrvine.

Visitors to Gasworks Arts Park will receive a map of the exhibition so they can embark on a self-guided tour around the four hectares of parklands. They can then vote for their favourite creation, giving their chosen artist an opportunity to win the annual $4000 People’s Choice Award. For the first time a new Jury Award, a $4000 prize will be selected by curator Tracey McIrvine, head of sculpture and spatial practice at VCA Dr Mark Shorter, and CEO and director of Gasworks Tamara Jungwirth. Both prizes have been generously donated by the Gasworks Patrons Foundation.

Gasworks Arts Park houses a thriving arts program of multidisciplinary art and performance. It is an inner-urban gathering place for creative minds and those appreciative of art in all forms. Situated 6 kilometres from the CBD on 4 hectares of parkland, Gasworks is home to 16 resident artists housed in on-site studios and presents changing exhibitions, festivals, performances markets, children’s programming and artistic workshops. The unique combination of extensive parklands and artistic spaces makes it a welcoming institution representing all that is great about the Melbourne arts scene.
