City of Port Phillip 2014 Design and Development Awards

Creative designs ranging from a skate park to urban art were recognised at last week’s 2014 City of Port Phillip Design and Development Awards.
Convic Design carried off the Mayor’s Award for the St Kilda Skate Park at Marina Reserve. All seven category winners were eligible for this overall award.
Acting Mayor Serge Thomann said the skate park, prominently located on the foreshore, was selected as the winning overall entry as its vibrant design was visually appealing while providing a safe and welcoming facility for the public to enjoy.
Now in their 12th year, the awards celebrate design excellence in architecture, urban design, heritage, sustainable development and urban art throughout the municipality and are well-respected in the design industry.
Cr Thomann praised the strong field of finalists, saying they all contributed to the atmosphere, style and liveability of the City.
“A welcome theme in this year’s entries was the increase in vibrant and sustainable design initiatives,” he said.
The awards, the first of their kind to be held by a Victorian Council when they started in 1998, are judged by the City’s seven councillors, who tour each nominated site. Mayor Amanda Stevens choose the overall winner.
About 160 guests, including industry professionals, attended the awards night. The MC was broadcaster Simon Knott, who presents “The Architects” program on Triple R.
The 2014 category winners announced at the gala event are:
–   Best New Single Dwelling or Alteration: Perrett Ewert Leaf, 90 Park Road, Middle Park
–   Best New Development (1-5 storeys): “Linear” by Ascui Edwards Architects, 141 Chapel Street, St Kilda                                                                                                             –   Best New Development (6-plus storeys): “Albert” by Elenberg Fraser, 50 Albert Road, South Melbourne
–   Best Non-Residential Development: Convic Design, St Kilda Skate Park
–   Best Heritage Re-development: Whiting Architects, 5 Kerferd Place, Albert Park
–   Best Sustainable Development: Paul Morgan Architects, South Melbourne Market Roof, Cecil Street, South Melbourne
–   Best Contribution to Urban Art: Emma Davies, Jeremy Kibel and James Hullick for art works at 50 Albert Road, South Melbourne.
