2019 VIVID Design Awards
Re.Bean Coffee Stool by Kristen Wang. Re.Bean Coffee Stool explores a brand-new sustainable material for furniture pieces from locally collected coffee ground waste and other coffee industry waste. The project features not only a unique smell and tactile of its materiality from coffee, but also its 100 per cent biodegradability – generating no waste to our natural environment.
Mesa Heat by Wayan Preston, Jed Kelly, Indigo Tolhurst. Sculptural dinnerware cast from recycled aluminium hair foils. The inspiration for their design aesthetic is from large landforms such as mountains and craters. They take elevation data then manipulate it into a desired form. All designs are smelted in a handmade foundry and moulds are 3D printed using biodegradable plastic.
Suspender Chair by Rachael Brown. The sustainable, eco-friendly ‘Suspender Chair’ prototype challenges the notion of seating as an inactive, sedentary activity. A mentally-stimulating, movement-encouraging chair with an innovative pull-apart design that makes it easy to replace and ship parts. The innovative joinery means when in use, the user’s weight makes the chair stronger.
Australia’s longest running design competition, VIVID, will return to Decor + Design this year to celebrate the very best of Australia’s emerging design talent. This year marks the 16th edition of this career-making industry platform, which shines a spotlight on our up-and-coming furniture, lighting and object designers from across the country.
Kick-starting the careers of many prolific Australian designers, VIVID is recognised as one of the most important destinations for both local and international designers who attend the show.
VIVID Curator and multi-disciplinary designer Daniel Dalla Riva from Latitude Group says, “2019 has produced the largest field of finalists since the inception of the program.”
“The designs are highly considered, and are exemplars of exceptional materiality and craftsmanship,” he adds.
The innovative work of the 53 nominated designers range from the experimental and conceptual to the utilitarian, and will be critiqued by a panel of prominent and respected industry figures at the VIVID Design Awards Gallery.
This year’s esteemed panel of judges include Anne-Maree Sergeant of Authentic Design Alliance, Georgia Danos of JR Furniture, Hayley Beaden of Tait, Dan Treacy of Rakumba, Jan Henderson Editor of Inside Magazine, Natalie Mortimer Editor of Australian Design Review as well as Filip Bjazevic from Latitude Group.
“VIVID is an ideal platform for finalists to exhibit their work and gain valuable insights from peers and industry leaders,” says Creative Director of Latitude Group, Filip Bjazevic.
