2019 Victorian Architecture Awards shortlist announced

Victoria’s top architecture projects have been announced in the 2019 Victorian Architecture Awards shortlist highlighting the state’s diverse architectural character.

The awards program, run by the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, features a shortlist of 89 projects across 14 categories celebrating public, residential, heritage and regional architecture.

Victorian Chapter President Amy Muir says that building sustainable communities is imperative and is achieved through carefully considered, robust and long-term interventions for Victoria’s cities and regions.

“At a time where we are acutely aware of the issues that our industry is facing due to increased procurement and economic pressures, the awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge the significant efforts made by architects, clients, consultants and contractors to provide quality built outcomes,” says Ms Muir.

With the number of heritage projects entered this year almost doubling, the Chapter President comments that this highlights the importance of Victoria’s cultural and built existing fabric, supporting varied approaches to working carefully within existing conditions.

“Most importantly, sustainability in design needs to be understood through the lens of longevity, going beyond short-term gains and visions. This is a prevailing message highlighted in our shortlisted projects this year.”

“All good buildings require a considered and collaborative design process. It is these projects that provide the best outcomes for delivering permanent benefits to communities at large,” says Ms Muir.

Another growing category in this year’s awards program is public architecture, which sees 11 projects shortlisted, a significant increase from only four projects shortlisted in this category in 2018.

“The design outcomes achieved via the shortlisted public architecture projects define the important role that the public realm plays in providing exemplar-built outcomes that support our growing communities and provide a legacy for future generations,” adds Muir.

“With population density rising across our cities, public space becomes an incredibly valuable commodity – not only from an economic perspective, but more importantly for the wellbeing of our communities.”

The shortlisted projects were selected by independent juries from a total of 248 entries.

All entries into the 2019 awards program will form part of an exhibition at No Vacancy Gallery, which will run until 21 April, and will highlight the array of architecture across the state.

The winners of the 2019 Victorian Architecture Awards will be announced at the official awards dinner on 28 June. Winners of each category will then be eligible for recognition in the National Architecture Awards program.
