Volker Haug Studio exhibits at Milan Design Week 2018

Volker Haug Studio will be exhibiting at Milan Design Week 2018, held from the 17th to the 22nd of April.

Invited as a representative of Australia’s Local Design, curated by Emma Elizabeth, Melbourne-based Volker Haug Studio will be showcased at the exhibition held in the 5Vie arts precinct. Local Design is a platform made by designers, for designers – a fact which appealed to this personable and playful studio which values collaboration over competition.

It was also a natural way to reconnect with Europe, birthplace of founder Volker Haug, and presented an opportunity to put a face to the brand that has already garnered interest from European customers.

Volker Haug Studio is establishing at Salone del Mobile a uniform space devoid of colour and distraction. The room is based on one of the studio’s product lines: Anton.

Glass surfaces and nondescript greys appear to collapse in on themselves while the metal fittings cast their forms from the walls. Unformed and ambiguous, this neutrality of space enables the viewer to visualise the force of construction in each of the products.

The Anton series itself explores the structural weight of light through cast materials. Punctuated by the lamp, the internal lit face of the Anton holds light and reflects its surrounds. Available as a circle (130 millimetres or 180 millimetres) or a rectangle (180 x 505 millimetres), Anton is cast in raw aluminium, polished gunmetal or glazed ceramic.

Three of the products on display in Milan are members of the Step & Kick series of lights: the Big Kick, Side Kick and Double Wall Step.

Step & Kick combines structural lines and refined materials with implicit gesture – the asymmetrical kick and the balancing step. A modular range designed around a formulaic language, the minimal design of Step & Kick highlights the craftsmanship in its details.

Released especially for Milan Design Week, Oddments is an expandable system of arcs mapping the durational imprint of their orbit.

Arcs are available in a range of sizes that can outwardly expand across the horizontal plane, ascend vertically or interact playfully. Segments can be hung singularly or combined to create an open or closed system, unconfined by scale or surrounds.

Volker Haug Studio is an international lighting design practice based in Melbourne, Australia. The multidisciplinary design and production teams work on lighting concepts across architectural scales and contexts. The studio adopts a spirited design approach that engages with the curiosity of the viewer to produce a decorative lighting range that is at once playful and functional, sculptural and surprising.

Founder Volker Haug explains: “I was born with a mischievous soul and a desire to create products with a distinctive twist with the lamp as a starting point.”

Working with metals, stone, ceramic and glass, each light is assembled and finished by hand in our workshop.

In parallel with Volker Haug Studio’s presence at Salone del Mobile (at Via Cesare Correnti 14), Archiproducts will be displaying the Big Kick and Side Kick in both polished brass and black enamel. These designs can be viewed at Archiproducts’ Milan showroom (at Via Tortona 3) until May 2019.
