SCCI Architecture Hub full programme announced

Founder, Executive and Artistic Director of the Sherman Centre for Culture and Ideas (SCCI), Dr Gene Sherman AM today announced the full programme details for its inaugural SCCI Architecture Hub 2018 with a notable line up of international and local speakers exploring architecture and the built environment.

“Following a sold out inaugural SCCI Fashion Hub in April, we will now celebrate architecture in all its complexity from 12–21 October with a rich programme for professionals and the general public that continues our work with SCAF and the Fugitive Structures architectural pavilions series,” Sherman commented.

Women and Architecture opens up lively discussion on the challenges faced by women architects in a profession with a high level of gender inequality. Ethical Architecture grapples with key social justice considerations in the built environment including how architects should approach shelter after disaster, and the pressing question of affordable housing: dream or reality? At 7.45pm, a panel of architects and artists discuss collaborations on public art commissions, including the trend to “embed” artworks in new buildings and public spaces and project imagery onto the built environment. Speakers unpack the enduring legacy of the young Sydney mid 20th century architects, who, influenced by European émigré architects, adapted the bungalow to local topography through site-specific linear buildings in stone and wood. Libraries are having a high-visibility cultural moment as community hubs and centres of cultural, intellectual and social activity. Library Architecture: A Renaissance explores challenges and innovations in library design to meet evolving community needs with Caroline Baum (author and broadcaster) moderator; architects Ninotschka Titchkosky (BVN – Woollahra Library) and Richard Francis-Jones (FJMT – Surry Hills, Craigeburn Libraries); and specialist library interior designer Cecilia Kugler (CK Design International). scci.org.au/content/library-architecture

A specially curated programme of architecture films will feature innovative architecture and leading architects, including:

Moriyama-san (Mon 15 October 15, 6.00pm Golden Age Cinema), presents a week in the life of the eccentric Mr. Moriyama in his extraordinary house designed by Pritzker Prize winner Ryue Nishizawa;

Koolhaas Houselife (Tue 16 October, 6.00pm, SCCI) portrays one of the masterpieces of contemporary residential architecture by Rem Koolhaas;

Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (Tue 16 October, 7.15pm, SCCI) documents the epic battle between urban activist Jane Jacobs and New York City’s development-oriented ‘Master Builder’, Robert Moses.
