Timber Flooring

When it comes to flooring materials, we mustn’t overlook the importance of what’s under our feet. Aside from its undeniable natural beauty, timber flooring presents a number of advantages.

Use of responsibly-sourced, certified wood reduces environmental impact. What’s more, timber is a renewable resource that actually stores carbon. In fact, an impressive 50% of the dry weight of wood is carbon, making it a far more sustainable material than concrete or tiles. The green credentials of recycled timber make it a go-to flooring choice for those with the environment close to heart.

Another strength of timber flooring is its extensive colour range and stylistic versatility. It is usually supplied as solid timber or laminated wood products. Whether it be in the form of classic, earthy strip timber or intricate geometric parquetry; timber floors lend character and personality to any space. They also assist in volume minimisation by virtue of soft acoustics.

Unlike carpeting, timber doesn’t soak up stains, retain odours or house pesky allergens and dust. If less cleaning and maintenance isn’t irresistible enough, wood is also significantly more durable. A carpet has an average lifecycle of 10 to 15 years, which pales in comparison to the 100 year lifespan of a quality timber floor. Even better, old timber floors break down naturally during disposal. They can also be repurposed and given a new lease of life, thus minimising wastage.

Timber has unique thermal performance because it is unaffected by temperature transfer. It is neutral, and as such doesn’t conduct heat or cold like tiles or concrete. Furthermore, the R value (i.e. the thermal resistance value) of timber flooring can be increased by placing insulation underneath the floor, between joists. This can improve house temperature performance overall. Perhaps most importantly, with timber there’s no need to fear the icy touch of tiles underfoot during those winter months.
