Architectural Photography Exhibition ‘Site Unseen’ Line Up Revealed

The Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) in Fitzroy will host its first dedicated survey exhibition of architectural photography from July 15 to 31 as part of the Open House Melbourne program.

Curated by photographer Tom Ross, fifteen Australian photographers including John Gollings, Rory Gardiner, Ying Ang, Rohan Hutchinson, and Brooke Holm, will explore the potential that is unlocked when architecture is viewed as subject rather than object.

Says Tom Ross: “In a time when architecture representation is being narrowed to imagery of persuasion, this exhibition serves as a reminder of the sincere exchange between people and the built environment.”

Site Unseen will take over all four galleries at CCP and aims to communicate the emotional experience of place, as well as the diversity of practices and understandings that encompass contemporary architectural and built-form photography.

Newly appointed Director of CCP, Daniel Boetker-Smith, says the exhibition will allow the participating photographers to bring their traditionally private responses to architecture into the public sphere.

Says Daniel Boetker-Smith: “Experienced largely on a subconscious level, architecture can contribute to moments of harmony and moments of friction in our every day. This exhibition calls for a moment of pause, to examine the built environment and our interaction with it through the lens’ of this incredibly talented cohort of photographers.”

All editioned works will be available for purchase, while two of Melbourne’s leading photography and architecture bookstores, Perimeter Books and Bookshop by Uro, will come together in a specially curated ‘pop-up’ for the duration of the exhibition.

Site Unseen will open at 6pm on Friday 15 July – all welcome – and run until Sunday 31 July, featuring work by Rory Gardiner, John Gollings, Coco and Maximilian, Erieta Attali, Annika Kafcaloudis, Mengzhu Jiang, Veeral Patel, Gavin Green, Morgan Hickinbotham, Brooke Holm, Pier Carthew, Shannon McGrath, Tom Ross, Ying Ang and Rohan Hutchinson.

The exhibition is part of the official Open House Melbourne (30 – 31 July 2022) program and has been made possible by generous supporters Milieu, The Local Project, Maddocks, PwC, Nelson Alexander and NHO. Additional curatorial support was provided by Fleur Watson, Executive Director and Chief Curator, Open House Melbourne.

The Centre for Contemporary Photography is located at 404 George Street, Fitzroy and is open Wednesday – Sunday between 11am and 5pm.
