Timber Memory and Summer Light at Craft

Timber Memory is a survey of Victorian woodwork from the 80s until now, presenting highlights from the State Craft Collection in conjunction with contemporary timber makers.

The rare opportunity to access and exhibit the Victorian State Craft Collection and pair these with contemporary pieces celebrates the talent and history of Victorian makers working with timber. Functional furniture, homewares and sculptural timber works explore this important natural material.

Artistic Director and CEO Jane Scott said Craft’s last exhibition for the year was a chance to revisit the State Craft Collection alongside contemporary woodwork.

“We’re thankful to Creative Victoria for allowing us access to this important woodwork collection. The rare opportunity to exhibit some of these historical pieces will delight those who remember the State Craft Collection fondly. “The links between old and new ways of thinking, technique, style and motivation are explored.

“We think this exhibition really points to the talent and precision of Victorian timber makers,” Ms Scott said.

Timber Memory features internationally renowned makers such as Helmet Lueckenhausen and intriguing stories behind works such as Damien Wright’s Parma – a custom-made commission piece made with secret compartments designed to hold a family’s sentimental artefacts.
