Inside, we profile Vue de Monde Executive Chef Hugh Allen, who was dicing onions at Neil Perry’s Rockpool when, at the same age, most of us were still passing notes in class and daydreaming about careers.

green magazine issue 89 - feature - heart of home

After that, we explore four homes.

First, a Northcote extension by architects Mihaly Slocombe that skilfully demonstrates how a century-old house with a small footprint on a compact site can be transformed into a comfortable home – tailored to meet the needs of owners Claire and Brent.

Akas Landscape Architecture, Green Sheep Collective and a creative couple with design nous, clear vision and open minds have transformed a disconnected Pascoe Vale brick veneer into a thermally-efficient mid-century gem.

green magazine issue 89 - house - wild glamourAnd for our final house feature, Narrow House, designed by Stuart Vokes and Aaron Peters from Vokes and Peters architects and built over a span of 10 years.

green magazine issue 89 - house - slowly but surelyNext up, our two garden features. The first one, by Maguire + Devine architects, showcases multi-generational living on a steep site in Tasmania that has provided the proximity of family, community and a cosy refuge from the big arctic weather.

green magazine issue 89 - garden - hobart hyggeThe second, a series of layered spaces set into a sloping site with views of MacMasters Beach, sensitively composed by James Headland of Pangkarra Gardens.

green magazine issue 89 - garden - built to spillAnd finally, we head to the east coast of Tasmania where Spring Bay Mill, originally a forestry mill, has been transformed into a retreat, of sorts, by Gilby + Brewin, a horticulturalist, and a group of environmental scientists.

green magazine issue 89 - travel - hope springs eternal

And of course, our regular segments Upfront and Upfront Garden share a curated spread of projects, products or creations that we love. Plus, explore this issue’s Permaculture Tips by Karen Sutherland from Edible Eden Design, and Heide II by McGlashan Everist in What I Like About You.
