‘Preliminary Structures’ contemporary craft exhibition
‘Preliminary Structures’ (9 March – 4 April 2021) is a contemporary craft exhibition featuring the work of makers and designers working across ceramic and glass disciplines.
Presented as part of Melbourne Design Week, the curated exhibition will showcase sculptural works created through experimentations with moulding and casting techniques over a four-week period at Creo Gallery, Cremorne, Melbourne.
Exhibitors will combine studio and industrial making methods to create expressive works that experiment with elements of modularity, repetition, surface texture and scale. Works will explore new ideas and concerns as investigated through mould making processes, and reflect on craft’s complicated relationship to industry, sculpture, design and architecture.
The exhibition will elevate the industrial processes commonly associated with mass-manufacturing and functional ware in a contemporary art context, and boldly situate them at the cross-section of art, design, craft and industry.
‘Preliminary Structures’ curators, Josephine Briginshaw and Eliza Tiernan, say ‘one of the big drivers in the development of the exhibition was to bring attention to the creative possibilities of moulding and casting techniques in contemporary craft practice.
“Coming from the craft and design field, we regularly encounter a type or stigma associated with the use of these methods, and we wish to challenge any preconceived ideas of replication and industrial perfection and reposition these “preliminary structures” and their processes for their craftsmanshwip and artform.”
‘Preliminary Structures’ will open to the public on Tuesday 9 March 2021 and will include works by renowned second generation craftsperson, Damon Moon (VIC), glass artist, David Herbert (VIC), industrial designer, James Walsh (NSW), ceramic artist, Kirsten Perry (VIC), ceramicist, Kristin Burgham (VIC), glassblower, artist and designer, Liam Fleming (SA), and ceramic artist and master mould-maker, Somchai Charoen (NSW).
