The Australian Institute of Architects has announced the shortlist for the 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards, with the largest number of entries of all Australian states, and a total of 228 submissions across 15 categories including Sustainable Architecture, Regional Architecture, Heritage and the popular Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing Category.

In 2024 significant regional projects to be shortlisted include Wirrng Wirrng, a new community hub for Queenscliff by Kerstin Thompson Architects, in the Public Architecture category. As well as the Galkangu building in central Bendigo by Lyons, shortlisted in both the Regional Architecture and Commercial Architecture categories, and a recent project to connect Mildura’s CBD and community to the Murray River, Powerhouse Place by Public Realm Lab, shortlisted in three categories – Urban Design, Regional Architecture and Sustainable Architecture.

Striking examples of the Interior Architecture category from residential projects include Northcote House by LLDS; Fairlie Apartment by Kennedy Nolan; Geelong Arts Centre (Stage 3) by ARM Architecture, also nominated in Public and Urban Design categories and Up There, a new flagship store on Flinders Lane by Kennedy Nolan.

The Sustainable Category features projects such as Sweetwater House by Christopher Botterill and Jackson Clements Burrows Architects, also nominated for the Colourbond Award; and Aboriginal Housing Victoria by Breathe, also nominated in the Residential and the Melbourne Prize, and Life Cycle by Steffen Welsch Architects.

The 2024 Victorian Architecture Awards will be presented at the Awards Night Dinner on Friday 7 June at the Astor Theatre in St Kilda. Winners of the Victorian Awards will be entered into the National Architecture Awards, announced in November.

Run annually by the Victorian Chapter of the Institute, the Victorian Architecture Awards celebrate the best architecture across the state, collectively showcasing the positive impacts of architects in shaping the built landscape for all Victorians.

The Exhibition of Entries is a rare opportunity for the public and industry peers to view the state’s best and most recent architectural outcomes drawn from this year’s submissions. The public is welcome to view the remarkable work at Deakin University, Burwood from April 18.

David Wagner FRAIA, Victorian State President and 2024 Chair of Juries said “This year’s Victorian shortlist — the largest in the country — showcases the extraordinary breadth and quality of work our members are doing to improve the built environment for communities across our state.”

Following a highly successful presentation day, our juries are excited to visit shortlisted projects to experience the innovation and design excellence of our profession in person.”
