2016 Victorian Architecture Awards Shortlist Announced

The Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Chapter has announced the shortlist for the 2016 Victorian Architecture Awards.

Following presentations of all 198 entries in the program in March, 14 juries carried out an intensive schedule of site visits and have shortlisted 70 individual projects across 15 categories.

Across all categories shortlisted, the focus on community is evident, showcasing architecture’s ability to contribute to the public realm in a variety of positive and innovative ways.

Shortlisted in the Public and Sustainable Architecture categories, projects in the western suburbs of Melton South and Point Cook – Western Business Accelerator and Centre for Excellence (BACE) by Six Degrees Architects and Saltwater Community Centre by Croxon Ramsay Architects, also shortlisted for the Melbourne Prize, are examples of local councils working successfully with architects to activate and invigorate these outer suburban localities.

Reservoir Library and Community Centre by fjmt studio transforms the local precinct and optimises access to community facilities for the area, while Geelong Library and Heritage Centre by ARM Architecture, shortlisted in three categories, has created a new community hub and architectural icon for Geelong.

Shortlisted for the COLORBOND® Award and part of the Southern Cross Station masterplan, 699 Bourke Street by Grimshaw gives back to the city through the creation of a new public pedestrian laneway bridging Melbourne’s CBD and Docklands.

Meanwhile, on the northern edge of Melbourne’s CBD Peter Elliot Architecture + Design’s redevelopment of RMIT Building 11, once the Old Melbourne Gaol Chapel and Governor’s quarters constructed in 1860, now houses offices, student meeting spaces and flexible event space and has been shortlisted for Heritage Architecture.

On the other end of the scale, Carlton Cloister by MRTN Architects, one of the projects shortlisted in the Residential Architecture – Alterations & Additions category maximises use of its full block to accommodate for a growing family community.

Jury Chair Christie Petsinis noted how this ‘affordable extension typology could be applied to many single fronted terrace houses, increasing density and providing flexible spaces to enable families to still reside in the inner city without moving further out’.

And shortlisted in the Sustainable category, Grass House by David Luck Architecture shows how residential architecture can give back to the street; the building is the garden, the grasses are the tree canopy.

Winners will be announced on Friday 24 June at 7pm at a presentation event held at Peninsula at Central Pier, Docklands. Winners in each category will progress to compete for National Architecture Awards announced in November. Tickets for the Presentation Dinner are now on sale through the Chapter.
